How To Benefit From Being Pessimistic
by Scott Tousignant · Filed Under: Motivation
The Law of Attraction and positive thinking are two phrases that have been blasted across the Internet, radio frequencies, and television stations ever since the movie “The Secret” was released to the public. There’s nothing wrong with positive thinking and using the Law Of Attraction to help you get what you want and deserve out of life. I practice the LOA and am ridiculously optimistic by nature
But in order for me to be successful in all areas of life I need to embrace a pessimistic outlook as well.
One of the problems that the Law of Attraction movement has created is that it gives you the impression that you have to think positive all the time and the second a negative thought pops into your head you need to banish it and replace it with a positive thought. This can be a recipe for disaster if you are not careful with this strategy.
What happens when things do go wrong? Do you throw in the towel and say, “The Law of Attraction doesn’t work” and give up on your goals completely?
Lets use fat loss as an example. You’ve set a goal to release the last 10 stubborn pounds of belly fat from your body, you set a date to achieve it by, and you put the Law of Attraction into place by visualizing yourself walking on the beach, proudly displaying the flat stomach that you just created. You sit there and think nothing but positive thoughts. The moment that you begin to have doubts about achieving your fat loss goal you immediately replace it with a positive thought. But then…
…After 6 great weeks of doing really well on your diet and working out consistently you are faced with a challenge, whether it be a party where you gave in and binged on junk food and alcohol, a bad cold that has you lying in bed for days, a big project at work that demands extra hours of your time, or an injury that sidelines you for a couple weeks.
What happens at that point? Do you question the Law of Attraction? After all the positive energy that you put behind your goal you didn’t achieve it yet again. Do you throw in the towel? Do you brush off the Law of Attraction for good?
One of the downfalls that I see with using the Law of Attraction is the total disregard for the benefit of pessimism or negative thinking. If you want to be successful in any area of life you need to get optimism and pessimism working together for you.
Sometimes you have to take those rose colored glasses off in order to see the true path to success in front of you.
Here’s a clip from my movie “The Change Series“. In this clip you will hear some great words of wisdom from one of my mentors John Paul Micek.
How Do You Make A Pessimistic Outlook Work For You?
Sticking with the fat loss example you definitely want to believe in yourself and believe that you will achieve your goal of releasing the last 10 stubborn pounds of belly fat. You want to put as much positive energy behind it as you can and practice many of the mindset and motivation strategies that are revealed in the Change Series or Unstoppable Fat Loss. But you have to realize that your journey to achieving your fat loss goal is not going to be a smooth straight road no matter how much positive energy you put behind it.
You need to prepare yourself for the inevitable roadblocks and challenges that lie ahead of you. Trust me, you will face challenges and setbacks. It happens to the best of us. When you allow the ‘negative or pessimistic thought’ about the challenges that you will face to enter your mind and you take that thought and come up with a plan to overcome it, you will increase your chances of success dramatically.
You don’t need to dwell on those negative thoughts. Just become aware that the journey is not going to be perfect and come up with a plan to overcome those challenges.
You can even have a list of things that could possibly go wrong and next to those items have a solution for overcoming those challenges.
This practice will help put you in the frame of mind that you are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve your goal. That creates a positive outlook. That creates certainty in your ability to achieve your goal.
The Law of Attraction really works, but you need to combine it with a short term pessimistic view and action that is filled with purpose and passion.
What are your thoughts? How has the Law of Attraction worked for you? Do you think the Law of Attraction is just a bunch of psycho babble? Are you going to adopt a bit of a pessimistic view about your goals and do you see the benefit of it?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Please share them in the comment box below. All of us at the Fat Loss Quickie blog are grateful for your thoughts and opinions.
You ROCK! Enjoy the experience,

Excellent article. You are correct you have to be willing to do most anything to achieve your goal. You need to have the drive to complete your task and make your dreams come to. Thinking about how hard things will be will never get you anywhere. People could learn alot from what you write here. Thanks

Great post Scott…and great video clip too if I must say so myself. LOL! I’ll restrain myself in getting off on a very valuable sidebar on the many pitfalls and shortcomings inherent in the “law” of attraction.
Seriously though, labeling any and all thoughts/comments as “negative” that go against what we have envisioned as an end goal is VERY dangerous. In business, that type of thinking is likely to result in you getting unexpectedly hit by some torpedo that comes out of no where, and then being completely sunk by a myriad of shots that unfailingly reverberate throughout the business.
Seeing the potential negatives, assessing their probability and taking preventive action based on the potential damage they could incur; that is what differentiates successful businesses from mom-and-pop operations that are really nothing more than minimum wage “jobs” wrapped in a delusion of entrepreneurship.
Being able to react quickly based on a predetermined plan may not prevent you from getting hit by a rogue torpedo, but it sure as heck means you’ll be able to react and recover quickly. If that’s not “positive”, I don’t know what is.
I live by the creed on of my first mentors taught me; “Be a long-term optimist and a short-term pessimist.” Since he’s worth over $100-million, I think I’ll stick with what he’s got to say on this subject.
Hi Scott
Great question! And one of my favourite topics …
The thing about LoA is that everything we experience is part of it … the good, the bad and the ugly … so to speak! We all know how wonderful it feels to be ‘in the zone’
… when everything just flows … But likewise we’ve all experienced times that were the absolute opposite.
However our negative emotions, thoughts and beliefs are where the real work happens and isn’t it through dispelling these that we grow?
… As that coaching guru (and genuine nice guy) to the guru’s @richschefren says; ‘if we’re not (or our business is not) growing … then we (and it) are receding’(or worse) … ouch!
I recently learned a smart approach to use from AnaMaria Herrera (another great mentor) @AgentEFT – EFT Practitioner and Trainer and I’m sure she won’t mind me sharing here …
She says a missing step should be implemented once we’ve set a goal … and that is to deal with any limiting beliefs that may conflict with our best outcome. If we don’t, the flow will be blocked and we may give up and say this stuff doesn’t work
And of course that would be a great pity as it never switches off right! And that coaching mantra comes to mind right now … whatever you think you’re right!
But once we’ve got the negative issues to surface we can work on dissolving them … and then continue with the cosmic wishing process …
I think Rich would agree with this although he’s more likely to apply it in business terms … But I find as a self-employed solo-preneur they become one and the same anyway!
As a Health Coach EFT is fast becoming a firm favourite, because of the speed and accuracy at which it works … for clients and myself.
I saw your link on Twitter and as you may realize, I’m passionate about your topic today and just had to join in with your conversation …
