Fun Fitness and Motivation

When you are attempting to get from point A to point B it makes sense to take the path of least resistance. In our fast paced, time crunched society most of us would be grateful for any opportunity to arrive at our destination faster. But there’s a price that we are paying for this type of mindset?

I’m absolutely floored when I see someone get in their car so they can drive around the block to the corner store.
I’ve witnessed countless people fight over a parking spot that is closer to the store entrance even though there is another one open just three spots down.
I have seen a crowd of people wait ten minutes for an elevator when it would have taken them just one minute to walk up three flights of stairs.
Have we really become that lazy? What are the consequences of continuing on this path?
The movie Wall-e sure painted a grim and not very far fetched picture of what our future holds for us if we don’t begin to make some serious changes. The future of the human race didn’t even require us to walk anymore.
When convenience and instant gratification rules our thought process, what could we possibly do that would motivate more people to take the stairs instead of an escalator or walk to the corner store instead of driving?
Here’s one concept… It’s called “The Fun Theory“, which is an initiative by Volkswagen.
Check out this incredible video and prepare yourself for some amazing results from the Piano Staircase experiment…
Did you notice how packed that escalator was at the beginning of the video?
Did you see the two women who were about to take the escalator before they noticed another woman walking down the stairs and heard the piano sound produced by her steps?
Did you see how creative people were becoming when they were walking up and down the stairs?
Did you see how much fun they were having?
I’m under the impression that as a society we have forgot just how much fun exercise can be. We associate pain and deprevation with exercise and think that the only reason to participate in a fitness program is to lose weight. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Making fitness fast and fun is something that I pride myself on. When you have fun being active you are more likely to stick with it for the long term.
What do you do to make fitness fun? What did you think of the Piano Staircase video? Do you have any other creative suggestions? Please share your thoughts in the comment box below.
You ROCK! Enjoy the experience,

Oh, how revealing, eh? Can you believe people’s conditioned responses – taking the easy way first unless there’s something “in it” for them? Amazing.
It’s the instant gratification thing, isn’t it?! Exercise that has immediate results, aka fun, will be more appealing. So, no matter how much a person knows that they should take the stairs, unless there’s some sort of instant gratification, most of us will opt out. Sad, but true.
And Scott, I have also seen people jockeying for position for a parking space one spot closer to the door. These are able-bodied people who can’t seem to tolerate the thought of walking a few more feet. I’ve even seen this in front of a gym!
These are pretty simple lifestyle changes, or challenges if you will. Take the stairs, park further from the door, etc. etc. Surprising that some folks don’t get it, or won’t do it.
It’s silly but true – we need a bit of fun when we exercise or it just isn’t very appealing. That’s why I like your “Fat Loss Quickies” so much. I laugh my butt off rolling around on that floor ball!
Thanks for the great post. Motivation, instant gratification, fun, a chuckle or two… whatever it takes to exercise today I’m all for it!
